How long before all homes in America have solar panels enabling us to sell power back to the providers?

solar power
Shawn P asked:

It would be great to have an electric meter that ran both ways. Thereby only allowing the electric companies to charge us for the power we did not compensate for by solar power.

We in the electric car associations have wondered that for over 30 years. Ed Begley Jr. is one who long ago had converted to solar cell technology and is independent of the big utility companies. If all the house owners converted it would be a sad day for electric companies.

Not soon enough!!! If I could afford it, My whole house would be solar powered. I live in north central Texas and we get sun almost everyday!!!!!!

Honestly it will never happen just like we will never be rid of vehicles relying on oil and gas.

Part of the issue with solar panels is cost the other is not enough supply for demand. The last part the overall economics just wont allow for such a drastic change. Itll be at least 100 years or more before eco friendly alternatives are in place in every house.

All the other answers are correct but it all boils down to the greedy powers-that-be (though there is a better name for them) will never allow it. It's money out of their pockets.
