Hey pat52007, good to hear from a fellow solar enthusiast.

I too have photovoltaic panels and batteries, and they are indeed quite wonderful.

But I was referring not to photovoltaic panels, but rather to the thermal solar system described in the video — but on a much, much smaller scale. Sold to individuals, a mini system could be very useful if it 1) was used to charge batteries, or 2)the kinetic energy was stored in a fashion similar to that in the video.

feelytouchy67; I have two solar panels on my motorhome that charge six batteries continuously, with power to spare. They are aprox. 2'x 1'

Not to mention the added benifet of reflecting some excess heat back into space. 1/5th of the Mojave (if mirrored) would power ALL of USA (assuming that everyone also had an e-car)! This it truely a miracle since it is the only? form of energy generation that defies the law of thermodynamics! With fossil's, it is excess heat and co2(more heat), with geo, just excess, with wind, it is neutral,

With black solar PV, extra heat again (unless 100% efficient, an impossibilty), and finally with solar thermal, less than, since that heat is already here baking the ground anyways, and the fact that some light is reflected back to space. The reason for this concern is: imagine clean co2 free energy… It still dissapates into heat. on a larger scale than humanity is now, we would still have to deal with heat. With mirrored generated, it's the opposite!

Because a "mini" system would probably engulf your entire front yard in solar panels.

Solar power should be the top priority of our energy department in the US. This technology has the potential to provide renewable energy to the entire world. Not exploring it to the fullest is gross negligence.

Anyone interested in electricity and fresh water production through solar thermal energy should take a serious look at the Desertec project for a detailed study and lots of arguments in favour of this approach.

convert Nelsons Column in London, at night it can be used as pigeon roost. In the morning you'll have sun dried pigeon, and a steam bath.

What if power plants like these were used to generate water desalination plants to address Australia's water shortage?

Excess solar-generated electricity could be used to power cars and public transportation- not to mention cooling for houses, businesses etc.

So what if it takes 10 or 20 years to pay it off… think of the benefits for the decades afterwards… What if hundred of similar plants were made in the deserts of northern africa, mongolia, and mexico/central america. And of course, the more you make, the cheaper and more efficient they become.

I think these types of plants that concentrate beams of solar energy are great. But . . . why can't I get a "mini" one, and use it to charge batteries?

11megawatts, thats pretty impressive, but I wonder home much it cost for how long it will take to pay it off?

very cool though

Why can't this be done in the UK? The number of days with sunlight is increasing.

Contact me for information, im expertise on solar energy and we wrae to built one cilindrical reflector solar power plant in Mexico by 2009.
