OK
2 panels at 80 watts = 160 watts per hour with full sunshine
8 hours of sun 7 days a week = 1.28 KW per day
1.28 KW = 1,200 Watts in 8 hours
You would have to be using all of that all of the time but you don't. At the amount you invested I calculate it will take you 28 years to get your money back. But, you have a smaller carbon footprint and that is a great thing.

not sure how many watts that is, based on the fact that one 14w bulb pulls about 1 amp hr, that should be about 70,000 watts, I think. Please correct me if i'm off.

fencekid

Check out older comments for a price check. I have used just over 5,000 amp hrs so far.

How much did the whole setup cost?
How many watts have you consumed with it so far? Thanks

Small scale, convert parts of your house, is where it's at! While you're at it start converting your house to DC powered lights and appliances, ditch the inverter and change the world. The guy hate'n on it and spewing about solar calculators is a kook.

On my inverter, the fan speed will fluctuate depending on the load. The fan will kick on well before it heats up. Just turning on a few lights will kick it on. The heaver the load, the higher the fan speed.

lamartosh

hey when does the fan on the inverter come on ?does it heat up before it comes on because mine did nt come on when i hooked it up .but i ran a fan for a few mins ,just to make sure it worked. thanks letosh

that sounds great. The thing is, electricity is already very cheap. At 9-10 cents a KWh any solar set up is going to be more expensive. Batteries die after a couple years OR LESS. You have to remove snow off of the panels, etc. It's expensive in time and money no matter what. You only do solar for the environment because you won't save any money for sure. Also, solar heating is truly cheap and saves you much more money. Ppl should focus on that.

the only way to keep the system cheap is to make the panels yourself components such as solar cells can be found on ebay
as for price DIY panels cost 250 usdollars for 80 watts better than spending 800 or 700 usdollars for a new one
the cells can be bought in packs of 36 cells mono cristalin THE BEST

the 80s? So u can take yer calculator off the grid! Yippee.

smokedaddyo

a solar powered calculator! are you friggin serious dude! when did they start making those?

March 23, 2009

wackyMacky801

its cheap because it only runs his lights and 19" TV. You can get a solar powered calculator also thats really cheap.

like i said above, the bigger inverters are a lot more expensive. Small scale solar is cheap, but so is electricity from the grid. When you get bigger solar it gets exponentially more expensive. $20,000 is what you would need to satisfy most homes electricity needs.

Thats great, just let everyone know that you ONLY run lights and small watt TVs. That refrigerator is no doubt running on the grid. And if you have a microwave, that is also on the grid.

I had that inverter. In order to get an inverter that would run a microwave the price goes WAY up. Instead of doing all that work, just convert to flourescents and low watt appliances, it's less work and saves u more money.

very nice video and a real nice setup for sure.
where did you purchase all your components at if you don't mind saying , I'm very interested in a setup close to yours but with a little bigger inverter any help you can give me would be appreciated. Thanks

minesapint123

Nice work. A very wise investment.

Dave, I love it! I have just started looking into solar power and this is a great video, it answered a lot of the questions I had. Thanks, Joe.
