it depends on where you live in the world. Solar power would NOT work in Ireland. we don't get enough hours of sun. our government is looking into wind and tidal power ^_^ its looking pretty good too. there are a ton of wind farms throughout the country and they are developing tidal power as we… type…

No, we need nukes too. Lots of nukes like they have in France.

Really anything other than coal and other fossil fuels is the best option. Anything to stop pumping more CO2 into the atmosphere.

Positives? It's all positive. Satellite solar power stations would be totally cool because they work 24/7. But we need a space elevator to build them. Now that we can fabricate carbon nanotubes the major problem associated with a space elevator has been solved. We have the super strong fiber we need to make the cable. The rest is just engineering.

Solar power is the best long term concept to reduce global warming/CO2 emissions. Ultimately all renewable energy (minus geothermal) comes from the sun's energy. Following nature's concepts of sustainability is one of the keys to having a sustainable energy system. Wind power is a good idea and necessary, but it will not be enough, because it has too large of a footprint to be our energy staple.

I can give a certain negative- it's cloudy where I live most of the year. Wind would be better for me.

No one technology is perfect for every area, that's why we use a wide variety of energy sources already- coal, nuclear, gas, hydro, biomass…

One MAJOR negative is the power required to produce the solar cells themselves!!

Boom

Long term it is probably one of the best options when combined with wind energy but some additional refinement of the technology will be needed, both in terms of efficiency of the panels and storage of the energy.
